Heron's Perspective on Mindset

When winter arrives, the heron does not go hungry because of the cold and ice. Rather it adapts to the new surroundings by fishing in the ice or changing its diet to amphibians, reptiles, invertebrates. When it comes to hunting the heron is a poster child for a growth mindset. By adapting to its changed environment it demonstrates the belief that abilities are dynamic; that through effort and learning abilities can improve.

“I can't change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.”
- Jimmy Dean

The Pillar on Mindset

Pillars that offer insight and wisdom to ponder.

No one starts out with grace and optimism, we work towards it. It is not a smooth road for anyone; it includes stumbling, gliding, tripping, and soaring. The goal is to get out of victim thinking in and into a place of empowerment. Let's leave victim thinking behind by focusing on what you can control and take action on it.

When we feel we have control over our situation we feel inspired, our coffee tastes better, and the sun shines more brightly. This largely hinges on our mindset, particularly our beliefs about the effectiveness of our efforts. There are two primary forms of mindsets: fixed and growth.

When we believe that our efforts and perseverance will pay off we have a growth mindset.

When we believe our efforts are fruitless, we have a fixed mindset.

If you think your mindset is fixed then keep reading, your mindset can change and here is how.

Action Steps

Bite sized actionable things to have a growth mindset.

Look in the Mirror

Time to get honest.

You know your mindset is fixed if you;

Have fear about a situation.

Avoid a situation.

Give up easily.

You have a growth mindset if you;

Believe that your efforts and perseverance can pay off.

Embrace challenge.

Get Curious

If you are stuck in a fixed mindset, it’s time to let the light in. Get curious and start asking some questions.

What is this trying to teach me?

What is possible?

What good could come of this situation?

Lean IntoYet

Lean into the power of the word yet. It fits perfectly on the end of a sentence. I have not figured this out.. yet. Focus on what you can control and put your belief in yourself, you will get there. Time to give your coxswain a call so they can cheer you on.

1%

Pick the smallest thing you can do to make tomorrow better than today. Make a plan and stick to it. Call on a friend and ask them to hold you to it.

Feeling bold

What is the biggest step you can take to change your situation? What is stopping you from making that step?

Inquiry

Be curious as you read the questions below. Notice how they make you feel. What is exciting? What scares you? What are you willing to commit to?

Look in the mirror

Are your thoughts about your situation fixed or growth?

Get Curious

What question switches you to a growth mindset?

My favorite is "what is this trying to teach me?"

What progress have you made so far?

How can you celebrate that?

1%

The Heron's Perspective on Focus on Others Focus on Others Have you ever tried to see a fish in the water without polarized sunglasses? Well, let me tell you, it's near impossible. But as soon as you rest your Polarized sunnies on your nose, the fish are crystal clear. We can only see the fish when we have a different lens. One of the heron's strengths is its...

The Heron's Perspective Your 12 week newsletter to help you handle life's little and big challenges with grace and optimism. The Heron's Perspective on Other People You won't often see a heron on a double date. In fact the most common heron sighting is alone, perched at the water’s edge. However, for nesting, they gather in neighboring trees, high above the water, in colonies or rookeries. Multiple nests can be tightly packed into a single canopy, like apples on a tree. A colony can hold as...

The Heron's Perspective Your 12 week newsletter to help you handle life's little and big challenges with grace and optimism. The Heron's Perspective on Acceptance I have observed the heron though all kinds of weather. Rain, blistering sun, freezing temperatures and the perfect fall day. No matter the situation the heron looks peaceful and free. Is it possible that the heron is not judging the weather? Does it know not to take it personally? What you resist persists. -Carl Jung Heron's Message...
