The Heron's Perspective on Love

Love

The blue heron is an unlikely mascot for love; however, it has traits that are worthy of your admiration. The heron exhibits true self-acceptance. It is not influenced by comparison, wishing it had the wings of an eagle or the beak of a woodpecker. It has no desire for things to be different than they are. We would all flourish with the self-love and acceptance of a heron.

The use of love is to heal. When it flows without effort from the depth of the self, love creates health.
-Deepak Chopra

Pillar on Love

Pillars that offer insight and wisdom to ponder.

Love

Love, a force of undeniable power. When love is present, it doesn’t just bring light, abundance and warmth- it becomes the very essence of those things. If absent, it feels like darkness, pain and scarcity will take over; but remember, love is a renewable resource. What a paradox for us all, lets look at how to optimize our experience with it.

Although I love weddings, first kisses and chick flicks that is not what this pillar is about. Why not? Simply because that kind of love is out of your control. The love I am talking about is self love and that, my friend is within your grasp.

In my study of love I learned about a practice that opened my eyes to a new way to access love. The idea comes from Dr. Sue Morter. She speaks about an inexhaustible well of love living within each one of us. The love you feel when you are around special people and places is your own love that has been activated. How freeing, we have all that we need inside of us! Whenever we need love, we can dip into our own well and fill up. And the best part? It's so abundant that it effortlessly replenishes itself, ready for the next time you need to draw from it.

Action Steps

Bite sized actionable things to help you get more love.

Don't Say No

Skip trying to add no into your vernacular. We are primed to say yes, so choose what you say yes to and make sure that you are in the center of it.

Say yes to your values, passions and intuition. Say yes to your health and YOU! Say YES!

Be Nanna

Have you ever noticed they way you talk to yourself? Would you ever say those things to a friend or even a foe? How would your Nanna talk to you? Try talking to yourself as you as your grandmother would; with compassion, kindness, understanding and encouragement.

Monitor Your Battery

No matter your self love battery capability we all experience battery depletion. When we know the signs that it is time to recharge and invest in ourselves we can take action before we completely run out. Honor yourself and your battery by listening to the signs and take action. Invest in yourself with; a few deep breaths, walk outside, have a healthy snack, listen to music, take a nap or an epson salt bath. Take a moment for you!

Use Your Memory

Thinking about a time when you felt deep love can give you that feeling again. We know the mind can't tell the difference between thought and reality so when we tap into a memory of love we actually feel it again. The beauty of this is that we can access love for ourselves any time we need it.

Do More of What you Love

What are the people places and things that fill your cup? When we make choices that provide more of what we love we spend more time in a place of love.

Tip: Looking at photos of places and people you love can put you in a place of love.

Hug Your Heart

Place your hands on your heart and gently push. Take a few deep breaths and soak in the feeling. The heart hug releases oxytocin and serotonin the hug hormones. If you're feeling brave throw a little "I love you" on top. If you can find time to do it in nature it's a bonus. If you want to hear about your heart from an energy expert try this.

Inquiry

Be curious as you read the questions below. Notice how they make you feel. What is exciting? What scares you? What are you willing to commit to?

Don't Say No

What is your go to YES TO YOU statement?

If I take on another thing now, I wouldn't be honoring my commitment to myself. Try me another time.

Be Nanna

Are your thoughts about yourself lifting you up or putting you down?

What can you replace some of your negative thoughts with? It's hard right now and I am doing my best.

Monitor Your Battery

What are the signs your battery is getting low?

Make a list of ways to recharge if you have one minute and another list if you have 30 minutes.

Do More of What you Love

How can you surround yourself with more of what you love?

Let your photos fill you with love. Use the Apple "for you" tab on your iPhone and fill yourself with loving memories. How do you feel?

Heron's Perspective on Mindset When winter arrives, the heron does not go hungry because of the cold and ice. Rather it adapts to the new surroundings by fishing in the ice or changing its diet to amphibians, reptiles, invertebrates. When it comes to hunting the heron is a poster child for a growth mindset. The Heron's Perspective on Other People You won't often see a heron on a double date. In fact the most common heron sighting is alone, perched at the water’s edge. However, for nesting, they gather in neighboring trees, high above the water, in colonies or rookeries. Multiple nests can be tightly packed into a single canopy, like apples on a tree. A colony can hold as...
